The Company that Cares: Patagonia

Patagonia used to be a small company which grew out from making tools for climbers. Now, they are among the leading manufacturers of apparel and gear for climbing, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, paddling and trail running. What sets them apart from other clothing brands is their love for nature and the environment.

In their official website, they clearly stated why they are doing what they do.

“For us at Patagonia, a love of wild and beautiful places demands participation in the fight to save them, and to help reverse the steep decline in the overall environmental health of our planet. We donate our time, services and at least 1% of our sales to hundreds of grassroots environmental groups all over the world who work to help reverse the tide.”

Since they know that they cannot prevent pollution and leaving a carbon imprint, they decided to reduce those things that can bring harm. For instance, they use recycled polyester in many of their clothes. Apart from that, they only use organic cotton instead of those pesticide-laden ones.

They have been on the business for thirty years or so and they are still doing a great job. They are not only producing quality and durable products, they also care for the environment. To some this up, let me quote their mission statement, “Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.” Now, that is certainly a company that cares.
